The University of Chicago School Mathematics Project seeks to raise the expectations for all students, bringing their performance in mathematics to world-class standards. Featured Events • Leonid Polterovich's colloquium at 3pm on Wednesday, Feb 14 in Eckhart 206 The title of the colloquium is 'Persistence barcodes in symplectic topology'. Install poweriso on linux. We will discuss applications of persistence modules, a tool originated in topological data analysis, to geometry and dynamics of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms. University Of Chicago Math Graduate ProgramBased on joint works with Egor Shelukhin and Vukasin Stojisavljevic. • Craig Evans to give the 2018 Amick Lectures Craig Evans, Professor of Mathematics at UC Berkeley, will be giving the upcoming Amick Lectures during March 6-8, 2018.. • Alex Kontorovich's colloquium at 3pm on Wednesday, Mar 28 in Eckhart 206 The title of the colloquium is 'Sphere Packings and Arithmetic'. We define a general class of sphere packings, and study the subclass of 'superintegral' such. By connecting these to the theory of hyperbolic arithmetic reflection lattices, we prove that they only exist in finitely many dimensions, and in fact in finitely many commensurability classes, in principle allowing for a complete classification. • Hee Oh to give 2018 Namboodiri Lectures Hee Oh, Abraham Robinson Professor of Mathematics at Yale, will be giving the upcoming Namboodiri Lectures during April 16-18, 2018.. News and Announcements • Welcome to the department We are happy to welcome Eduard Looijinga, Pierre-Louis Lions, and Leonid Polterovich to our department. Eduard will be here for all of Winter and Spring quarters, Pierre-Louis from 1/1 till 2/2, and Leonid from 1/21 till 2/24. Thank you all for coming! • Work of UChicago mathematicians featured in Quanta The work of UChicago's Maryanthe Malliaris (with her collaborator Saharon Shelah) has been featured in a recent article on Quanta, 'Mathematicians Measure Infinities and Find They’re Equal'.. • More work of UChicago mathematicians featured in Quanta! The work of our current and former colleagues Alex Wright, Ronen Mukamel, Alex Eskin (with their collaborator Curt McMullen) has been featured in a recent article on Quanta, 'New Shapes Solve Infinite Pool-Table Problem'.. • Professor Wilkinson writes in the New York Times about Marina Ratner and Maryam Mirzakhani The mathematical world in general, and we, in particular, have suffered two great losses this year with the deaths of Marina Ratner and of Maryam Mirzakhani. Amie Wilkinson has shared some of her feelings in a moving and scientifically interesting tribute in the New York Times. The link is below...
